Officer Role Descriptions
President
Oversees day-to-day student life and internal proceedings of the section. Coordinates the activities of the various section representatives. Organizes and facilitates section meetings and announcements. Leads discussion and structures dialog within sections to help set section norms.
Admissions Representative
Escorts prospective students to class and answers their questions regarding student life at HBS. Coordinates hosting for various admissions functions.
Alumni Representative
Coordinates the selection of and subsequent fundraising for the Class Gift and acts as an initial point of contact for the administration on alumni related issues, including communication and interaction between current students and HBS alumni and communicating to current students information regarding alumni events, news, etc. Also serves as a sounding board for the Administration on various alumni initiatives that involve or are targeted toward current students.
Athletic Representative
Coordinates intramural athletic activities. Again, although there will be only one person “officially” elected to this position, sections often choose to have one male and one female representative.
Career Representative
Develops and reports on the career recruiting opportunities. Keeps section informed on career services deadlines and procedures. Often creates a section resume book.
Leadership and Values Representative
Meets on a biweekly basis with other L&V Reps to discuss issues related to the L&V process. Interacts with faculty and students in an effort to continue the development process of Community Values. If necessary, the L&V Rep might participate in cases of violations of Community Values.
Education Representative
Enhances the section’s education process by facilitating communication between students and faculty and among the students themselves. Helps students find appropriate educational resources and support and works with the administration to address logistical issues relating to the education process. Ed Reps also create peer-tutoring systems and encourage the section to harness the talents and backgrounds of its members for the benefit of all.
Harbus Representative
Serves as the representative for the section to The Harbus News Corporation. Liaison with Section to provide content to the paper – encourage writers, photographers and cartoonists from Section to contribute; co-ordinate weekly “Gang Of…” update on section activities; ensure other section events (e.g. Sports coverage, community events, births etc) are covered in timely fashion. Position on the Harbus Board, which controls the activities of the Harbus, and related Harbus products.
Historian
Responsible for keeping the historical record of the section. The historian often collects pictures of their section to incorporate them in the Harbus and Annual Report yearbook. The historian is often responsible for maintaining communication between section members after graduation and serves as a liaison between the school and alumni.
International Representative
Serves as a member of the International Students Committee. Represents the section in areas of concern to international students and serves as an important resource for all students.
SA Social Rep
Serves as a member of the SA Social Committee and assists in coordinating school-wide social events including Holidazzle, Newport Ball, HBS Talent Show, etc.
Senator
Represents the section on the Student Association Senate. Handles issues of general concern and specific section issues that need Senate attention. Serves as a member of ad-hoc and standing committees and task forces to deal with specific campus life issues. Works as a liaison between students, faculty, and administration.
Social Representative
Coordinates section and school-wide activities for social interaction. Although only one person can be “officially” elected on the SA ballot, many sections choose to appoint/elect multiple students to this position.
Technology Representative
Facilitates the use of technology in the section as an educational resource as well as a means of communication among students. Responsible for the section web page and for addressing technology issues that are relevant to the HBS experience. Serve as member of the SA Technology Committee working with other IT leaders and administration to develop the Harvard Business School IT strategy.
Treasurer
Secures a checking account, collects section dues and coordinates the financial needs of the section. Creates a first and second year budget and keeps the section informed of fiscal issues. Time commitment for this position is less than one hour per week once the account and budget are established.
Volunteer Coordinator
The Volunteering Coordinator will promote volunteering activities in the section in the first and second year. The Section Volunteering Coordinator will have two primary responsibilities: Representation of HBS Volunteers activities. This involves communicating and advocating for HBSV activities to his/her section, as well as coordinating section participation in HBSV events. Coordination of at least one section volunteering activity as desired by the section.
WSA Representative
Women’s Student Association Rep is a two year role that has three primary responsibilities: to develop a women’s network within the section by planning section-focused social, career and academic events; to represent the section in discussing women’s interests and issues in monthly meetings with other sections WSA reps, WSA’s VP of Advocacy, Faculty and Administration; and to communicate and promote WSA–sponsored events.
